The United States today hit a grim milestone — 100,000 lives lost to the coronavirus since February of this year. Without addressing the death toll, President Trump nonetheless wrote the following open letter to American families who have lost a loved one.

My Fellow Americans,

As a nation we mourn the loss of life due to the Wuhan Virus. No one mourns it more than I do, that I can tell you. Many nations around the world, 188 of them my people tell me, have been hit by what I call the invisible enemy. You can’t see it, but it is there, and it is very powerful. But we are more powerful, believe me.

I understand the pain you are going through. The fake media says “Oh, Trump doesn’t seem sad.” Fake news. Horrible people. I understand how you feel, because I can emphasize with you. In some ways, I am also a victim, maybe not as bad, but maybe more, who knows? No one has been treated more unfairly during this than me. First it was the ventilators — they said we were going to run out of ventilators, but we didn’t. In fact, many people are now saying I am like the king of ventilators. And it’s true. When the ventilator hoax didn’t work, they said we didn’t have enough tests. Fake news again. We have done more testing than anywhere in the world — in fact we don’t even have enough people to test. You should be very proud of your president for making this happen.

While you did lose a loved one — it could have been worse, much worse. If Sleepy Joe Biden had been president, for example, you might even be dead yourself, probably. The H1N1 flu, or swine flu, it goes by many names — I like to call it the Obama-Biden flu because of how horrible their response was — happened on Corrupt Obama and Sleepy Joe’s watch. Tens of thousands of people died, and their poll numbers were horrible. It was a disgrace, what happened to our country.

Your loved ones were great American patriots… very special people. They would want us to open America up again, and to Keep America Great. I will honor their memory by building — for the second time, really, if you think about it — the greatest economy in the history of the world. I know many of you are black, so I don’t have to tell you, but black unemployment was the lowest ever, we set a record, before the invisible enemy, as I like to call it… you can’t see it… hit us. Hispanic unemployment too, plus lady unemployment. Let’s not forget, girls work too. Many of them are waitresses, stewardesses, hairdressers… we love our hairdressers… very brave people on the front lines — we have to get them back to work. And we will. We are going to have a terrific third quarter, a really great fourth quarter, and then next year will probably be the greatest quarter ever in our country. Even Tom Brady, and he has had a great quarter or two, even he says “Sir, I don’t know how you keep doing so many great things so many quarters in a row.” Good guy, Tom. I like him. I think he is going to do very well in Florida. I did too, when you think about it. They said I couldn’t win in Florida, but I did. But they will never give me credit for it.

One of the things I want to do for your loved ones is to have a super-great concert as a tribute. Maybe we will do it in D.C., maybe at Mar-a-Lago, but probably D.C. We are looking at it very strongly. But it will be a great concert. We will have Kid Rock and many others. Ted Nugent. Scott Baio. The great Jon Voight. And, again, so many of you are African American, so I am pleased to say Diamond and Silk will be there too. It will be a great tribute to the fallen heroes in this war against the invisible Chinese enemy.

I also want you to know — and I didn’t have to do this — my people said to me “Sir, you can’t do that,” but I am going to do it anyway… if your loved one who died has a stimulus check coming, or if they haven’t cashed it, you can still keep the money. I need you to do us a favor, though, and spend it in one of the beautiful companies that are opening up all across America. Maybe we can get the Dow Jones to set a new record. We have set many records, more than any president in history, but maybe we can do it again as a tribute to them.

Our terrific first lady, Melanie, and her son, join me in letting you know that we will never forget you.

Have a terrific summer!

Sincerely,

Donald J. Trump, President of the United States
